Boeing is facing new legal issues as the US Department of Justice is investigating the January 5 incident, probing whether the manufacturer violated its 2021 deferred prosecution agreement related to the B737 MAX’s safety record.

The DOJ is considering criminal charges against Boeing for conspiring to defraud the FAA, with a plea bargain offer of a USD487.2 million financial penalty and appointing an independent safety compliance monitor for three years to avoid a public trial.

The United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently sanctioned the carrier for breaching its rules by disclosing confidential information regarding the N704AL incident during a media briefing.

The DOJ is currently advancing its investigation, and Reuters reports that the US government is planning to criminally charge Boeing, which could have significant implications for the manufacturer.
