Venice plans to extend its day-tripper tax for the next year, increasing the number of fee-eligible days to 54, with charges applying every Friday to Sunday and on holidays from April 18 to July 27, 2025.

The entry fee will double for last-minute visitors, rising to 10 euros for those who do not make reservations up to four days in advance, while the usual fee remains at 5 euros for early bookings.

Mayor Luigi Brugnaro defended the tax as a crucial measure against overtourism, despite criticism from some citizens’ groups and opposition councillors who argue it has failed to reduce tourist numbers.

The city has been struggling with overtourism, attracting an estimated 25m to 30m visitors annually, yet the tax reportedly netted 2.4m euros during a trial phase, highlighting ongoing challenges in managing visitor inflows effectively.
