Vietnam Airlines claims it is to implement sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for flights departing from airports in the EU, starting with a 2pc SAF blend and planning to increase this proportion over the coming decades.

The carrier aims to contribute to Vietnam’s net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050, with similar efforts planned for flights departing from the UK, targeting 10pc SAF blend by 2030.

Implementing SAF will raise the airline’s operational costs on its European network by approximately $4.8m annually, as SAF is significantly more expensive than conventional jet fuel.

Vietnam Airlines is expanding its European service, introducing new routes including a nonstop service from Hanoi to Milan, establishing itself as the only Vietnamese airline to operate direct flights to Italy, and plans to launch additional services in 2025.
