Volotea will close its base in Athens after the summer season of 2025, having operated it for six years, but will maintain its flight schedule to and from the airport with 330,000 annual seats.

The airline offers direct flights to 16 destinations from Athens and continues to provide over 100 routes through its partnership with Aegean Airlines, which owns a 13pc stake in Volotea.

Although Greece has become Volotea’s smallest base market, accounting for 0.7pc of its capacity, over 90pc of its scheduled capacity is focused in France, Spain, and Italy.

Following the base closure, Volotea will relocate its two A320-200 aircraft and has offered Athens-based employees positions within its network; in response, Greek airline SKY Express has initiated a recruitment campaign for affected workers.
