Plans for a walkway and cycleway in Killarney National Park have been appealed to An Bord Pleanála after receiving initial approval from Kerry County Council.

The proposed infrastructure aims to enhance tourist safety by providing a raised walkway/cycleway of approximately one kilometre connecting Dinis Car Park to Torc (Cardiac Hill) car park.

The route is strategically located between the N71 roadway and the shore of Muckross Lake, making it accessible for visitors.

Supporters of the project describe it as vital for improving safety and accessibility for tourists exploring the park while serial objector Peter Sweetman has appealed the project, arguing the use of eady-mix concrete, structural steel, micropiles/rock anchors, and precast concrete deck slabs will negatively impact the environment and the council “has no understanding of the requirements set out by the European Court of Justice in the carrying out of an appropriate assessment.

The initial planning permission was granted to the National Park and Wildlife Service (NPWS) just last month.
