Waterford officially inaugurated as capital of Christmas

Waterford has just spent its first weekend as European capital of Christmas in 2024. The ‘Gateway to Brno’ feature at the Winterval Festival in Waterford was officially opened by the ambassador of the Czech Republic on Friday, symbolising a cultural connection between the two cities, both recognised as European cities of Christmas in 2024.

This unique live portal facilitates real-time cultural exchanges, encouraging visitors to interact and take part in over 50 festival events, including free offerings suitable for all ages.

The festival celebrates Waterford’s Viking heritage and includes attractions such as a Winterval illuminates lightshow, ice rink, vintage rides, food markets, and immersive experiences like gingerbread making workshops and an igloo exploration dome.

Supported by local and regional organizations, Winterval runs every weekend until December 23rd, featuring an after-dark program for adults with live performances by various artists, enhancing the holiday spirit within the community.
