Waterford Winterval festival plans 40 events starting December 23

The 11th annual Winterval Festival in Waterford will take place from November 17th to December 23rd.

The festival will offer over 40 events, including a gigantic Christmas Parade to officially kick off the festivities.

There will be a range of free and ticketed events, with some proceeds going to charity organizations. Highlights include a magical light show, Viking-themed experiences, Christmas markets, and a variety of family-friendly activities. Key events include:

  • Gigantic Christmas Parade: The festival will officially begin with a Christmas Parade featuring Santa Claus traveling from the Quayside to John Robert’s Square, where he will switch on the city’s Christmas lights.
  • Jingle Bells Christmas Cycle: A special cycling event that adds a festive touch to the city’s streets.
  • Christmas Tractor Parade: A unique parade featuring decorated tractors spreading holiday cheer.
  • SuirCon Comic Conference: A comic conference where comic enthusiasts can enjoy displays, workshops, and more.
  • Home Alone screening with the National Symphony Orchestra: The classic film will be screened accompanied by a live score performed by the National Symphony Orchestra.
  • The Armed Man at St John’s Church: A musical performance at St John’s Church.
  • Lions Club Christmas Concert at the Cathedral: A special Christmas concert organized by the Lions Club.
  • Giant Talking Postbox: A magical postbox where children can post their Christmas letters and enjoy an elf post-collection show on weekends.
  • Viking Yule Village: A village showcasing Viking heritage, allowing visitors to experience the smells, foods, and activities of Viking life during the festive season.
  • Adventure of Narnia Show: A fantastical show hosted at a mini Big Top in the city center, featuring aerial displays, fire breathing, and more based on the magical story of Narnia.
