New Ross Municipal District is progressing plans for Duncannon Fort, with engagement with the Planning Section nearing completion and works expected to begin in the spring.
€500k in Town and Village Grant funding announced in December 2022 for Duncannon Fort has led to the formation of a Project Team to open three buildings and revitalize the fort, which has been closed since 2014 except for summer tours.
The funding, combined with Wexford County Council’s €240,000, aims to unlock the fort’s tourism potential, create a regional attraction, and address maintenance issues like the bridge and electrical infrastructure.
The project will involve bringing three buildings into community, tourism, and retail/business uses, aiming to maximise the fort’s heritage potential by reopening it and seeking additional funding for further development, supported by collaboration with Hook Rural Tourism members as confirmed by New Ross Municipal District manager Alan Fitzhenry.
