A sod-turning ceremony marked the beginning of the construction of a €3m protected cycle track on Newtown Road in Wexford to include upgraded footpaths, road resurfacing, and is funded by the National Transport Authority.

This scheme is the first phase of Wexford County Council’s Active Travel Team plan, with future phases extending the infrastructure to Wygram and closer to the town center. It will also provide connectivity to the future Beechlawn/Clonard cycle scheme.

The project aims to improve the safety of cyclists and pedestrians by developing protected cycle tracks, upgrading footpaths, and reducing traffic speeds in the area. It is part of the Wexford Pathfinder Project, which aims to transform travel by 2030.

The construction is expected to take nine months to complete, from November 2023 to July 2024. Motorists should anticipate some delays during this period
