
From 4th June, a Northern Ireland Pet Travel Document is required for bringing pets from England, Scotland or Wales to Northern Ireland, lasting their lifetime.
Pets must be microchipped before their rabies vaccination; if not, they must be vaccinated again.
Pet owners will also require an animal health certificate is required for pets travelling to EU countries, valid for 10 days for entry and 4 months for onward travel.
If travelling directly to Finland, Ireland, Malta, or Norway, dogs must receive tapeworm treatment recorded by a vet within specified timeframe.
The rules vary for bringing pets back into Great Britain depending on the country of departure.
The Westminster department shared: “You must get your pet microchipped before, or at the same time as, their rabies vaccination. Get an animal health certificate from your vet if you’re going to an EU country. The treatment must have been given no less than 24 hours and no more than 5 days before you arrive. You cannot take more than 5 pets to an EU country unless you’re attending or training for an event.
