Some 600 airports worldwide are now certified under the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, it was revealed during COP29 in Baku.

Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE, highlighted the significant growth in accredited airports since the programme’s inception in 2009, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions in airport operations.

Heydar Aliyev International Airport received Level 2 certification, marking it as a leader in environmental sustainability within its subregion, demonstrating how local airports are contributing to global climate action.

The airport industry aims for further advancements, with 18 airports currently achieving Level 5 certification, which requires net zero emissions from their operations, aiming for comprehensive decarbonization by 2050 while seeking support from governments and international bodies.
