The Trump administration has proposed halving funding for the Essential Air Service programme, the American equivalent of PSO routes, from the fourth quarter of 2027 as part of its fiscal year 2027 budget request which officials revealed on 03 April 2026. The plan reduces overall EAS funding from 680.2m dollars this fiscal year to 315.7m dollars in fiscal year 2027 which equates to a cut of 364.5m dollars. The administration argues that the programme subsidises half-empty flights between airports that sit within easy commuting distance of each other and that spending more than doubled between 2021 and 2025.

The Essential Air Service programme provides subsidies to airlines so they continue scheduled flights to small and rural communities across the United States that would otherwise lose commercial air service. The budget document states that the programme funnels taxpayer dollars to support routes that fail to provide effective assistance to most rural air travellers. Officials propose a mix of reforms to adjust eligibility criteria and subsidy rates which they maintain will sustain support for rural air transportation needs in a more cost-effective manner while the programme continues to operate.

The proposal forms part of a wider 10pc reduction in non-defence discretionary spending across civilian agencies. Congress must still review and approve the budget request and lawmakers rejected similar deep cuts to the EAS programme in the fiscal year 2026 appropriations process. The current position shows the administration advancing the measure while industry groups and representatives from affected rural areas prepare to contest the reductions.
