Shannon report calls for extension of state aid to airports with more than 1m passengers

A report by Oxford Economics on the impact of Shannon Airport suggests that Ireland’s aviation policy has not created a level playing field for regional airports to thrive. 

It recommends updating the Irish Aviation Policy to support long-term growth targets outlined in Project Ireland 2040. 

It also calls for a review of the decision to exclude regional airports with a million passengers from state aid in the Regional Airports Programme.

The report headlines the fact that regional airports at a disadvantage and says that Shannon Airport has contributed almost €4bn to the gross domestic product. It has catalytic benefits for multiple sectors, including tourism, trade, and connectivity.

created 20,300 jobs and generated tax revenues of €643m. Testimonials from various organizations further emphasize its impact, including Northern Trust, Ei Electronics, Jaguar Land Rover, Chambers of Commerce, University of Limerick, and IDA Ireland.

The report proposes promoting Shannon Airport as the gateway to the Wild Atlantic Way, highlighting the ease of travel and differentiation from Dublin Airport’s congestion. 

In response, Minister Jack Chambers acknowledges the economic importance of Shannon Airport and expresses support for its role in rebalancing Ireland’s aviation landscape and driving regional development.
