Portugal tourism reports record April from Ireland with 56,413 visitors

Ireland sent 56,413 visitors to Portugal in April, up 3.3pc on April 2025 and 55.5pc on pre-pandemic. Rolling annual was 573,064, up 3pc on the twelve months to April 2025.

In April 2026, tourist accommodation establishments recorded 2.9m guests (+2.4pc) and 7.2m overnight stays (+0.6pc). Among the main source markets, Canada (+12.0pc), the Netherlands (+9.9pc), and the U.S. (+6.5pc) stood out with the highest year-over-year monthly growth in the number of overnight stays. By NUTS II region, Alentejo (+8.4pc) and the North (+4.1pc) saw the largest increases in this indicator.

From January through April 2026, Portugal received 8.7m guests who generated 20.7m overnight stays, primarily from England( share: 16.4pc), Germany (12.4pc), and the U.S. (8.8pc).

Accommodation providers recorded 2.3 m guests, which increased by 0.9pc, while overnight stays totalled 5.6 m, up 1.4pc.

Non-resident overnight stays drove growth as these rose 2.9pc to 4.0 m. Total tourism revenue reached €432.9 m, which increased by 6.6pc. The Irish and Spanish markets recorded the highest growth rates among the top ten inbound markets at 16.2pc and 14.0pc respectively while the Brazilian market saw a decline of 7.0pc.

Average daily rate stood at €98.6, which rose by 2.9pc. Data from Portal do INE confirmed these trends in the Portuguese tourism sector for the period.
