Coffeewerk + Press, on Quay Street in Galway City centre, has been named among the top 100 coffee shops in the world, at the Madrid Coffee Festival.

Daniel Ulrich’s cafe has been named in 39th place, according to the “World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops.” A mix of public opinions and experts’ evaluation were taken into account to reach the final selection.

Daniel was born in Galway of German parents and says Coffeewerk + Press was inspired by interactions at his gallery, the Wooden Heart. The shop serves specialty coffee sourced from renowned roasters like The Coffee Collective and features a gallery and designer products from around 50 different designers.

He sells art postcards and products from various international artists, and houses a collection of nearly 600 images and working with around 35 to 40 artists.

Toby’s Estate Coffee Roasters in Sydney, owned by Toby Smith, was named the world’s best coffee shop for 2025, outranking its perennial rival Proud Mary Coffee in Melbourne, which secured fourth place.

Toby’s Estate was founded in 1997 by Toby Smith, a lawyer who initially ran the shop out of his mum’s garage in Woolloomooloo.

The top three spots also include Onyx Coffee Lab from the US and Gota Coffee Experts from Austria, recognised for their quality coffee, customer service, and innovative practices.

Australia continues to excel in the coffee scene, with nine cafes featured in the top 10, reflecting its vibrant coffee culture shaped by European influences and local unique concepts.

The term “flat white,” often associated with Australian coffee, has its origins disputed between Australia and New Zealand.

Australia claims that Alan Preston, of the Moors Espresso Bar in Sydney, claims coined the term “flat white” in 1985, describing a type of espresso popular in Queensland in the 1960s and 1970s: “white coffee – flat”.

New Zealand claims Frank McInnes accidentally invented the flat white when the milk needed for a frothy cappuccino refused to rise by saying: “sorry, it’s a flat white”.
