Bid to end Canadian cruise stops for ships travelling from Seattle to Alaska

Alaska’s U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan announced plans to suspend the law requiring cruise ships to stop in Canada when travelling from the lower 48 U.S. States to Alaska.

Sullivan discussed this potential move during a talk radio interview on Tuesday hosted by Mike Porcaro on 650-KENI.

The Anchorage Daily News reported that a trade war could increase costs for Alaskans and negatively affect the state’s summer tourism season due to tariffs imposed on Canada.

Congress may consider passing a law to exempt cruise ships from mandatory Canadian stops, or Sullivan may seek an executive order from President Donald Trump.

Approximately 10 percent of travellers to Alaska are Canadians, with many starting their journey from Vancouver, where cruise ships typically dock before heading to Alaska from Washington state.
