Carlingford Lough Greenway’s new 11.4km stretch from Newry’s Albert Basin to Omeath has been opened, forming part of a 20km route to Carlingford.

Louth County Council partnered with Newry Mourne and Down Council and East Border Region to deliver the project, securing €5.14m from the European Union’s INTERREG VA Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.

Match-funding came from the Department for Infrastructure in Northern Ireland and the Department of Transport in Ireland, linking the greenway to the existing Newry-Portadown cycleway for a 52km off-road corridor.

The route promotes cycling and walking over private car use for leisure users, visitors, and locals, ensuring safe journeys between jurisdictions.

Walkers, cyclists, and marathon runners used the stretch before official celebrations, which included students from Scoil Naomh Bríd in Omeath and local councillors.

Minister Jerry Buttimer shared “The opening of the Carlingford Lough Greenway represents an exciting development for this region. It has resulted in a joined-up piece of walking and cycling infrastructure with a continuous greenway route now connecting Newry and Carlingford.”

Liz Kimmins MLA shared “This region already has so much to offer, and the completion of this fantastic active travel route will provide further benefits for local people and visitors to the area.”

Cllr Seán Kelly shared “Whether you’re commuting, out for a walk, or cycling with family, this greenway offers a safe, scenic, and sustainable way to travel.”

David Conway CEO of Louth County Council shared “The Carlingford Lough Greenway is a testament to the power of collaboration and vision.”
