The Clifden Station House hotel in Connemara, known for the Golfgate saga in 2020, saw post-tax profits fall 43pc to €437,972 in the 12 months ending May 2023.

The hotel is satisfied with its financial performance in the past year, crediting it more to the return of normal market conditions than a pandemic bounce, with future forecasts including a 6pc increase in room rates amid challenges of rising costs.

Two directors of the firm, including the hotel owner John Sweeney and his son James Sweeney, were part of a prosecution related to the Oireachtas Golf Society dinner but all charges were dismissed by a judge in 2022.
