Cobh Tourism has launched an innovative Irish language bookmark to help tourists learn common sayings during their visit to the harbour town, supported by Cork County Council.
The bookmark offers useful words and phrases in Irish for traditional greetings and day-to-day interactions, coinciding with Seachtain na Gaeilge (Irish language week) and aligning with efforts to promote Irish language and culture to visitors.
The bookmark has received a positive response from international visitors, including the American Olentangy Orange High School Marching Band, offering phrases such as “Enjoy our beautiful town” and “Welcome to Cobh” with phonetic pronunciation for easy use in pubs, restaurants, and cafés.
The bookmarks will be available at Cobh Tourist Office, tourist attractions, hotels, cafes, and information points, contributing to the town’s reputation as a popular visitor destination with a rich history and deep connections to events like the Titanic tragedy and Irish emigration.
Jackie Coakley from Cobh Tourism said “The Irish language is a unique feature of our culture and identity which is both important to preserve and promote. We hope that learning and using some Irish phrases will be as memorable and positive an experience for our visitors as visiting St Colman’s Cathedral or Spike Island.”
