
Princess Cruises announced the passing of Captain Michele Bartolomei aboard the Diamond Princess due to a sudden medical emergency.
The ship, currently offering cruises to Japan and the Far East, will continue under the command of Captain Salvatore Macera following Bartolomei’s death.
Princess Cruises reassured guests of their commitment to safety and smooth operations, stating that the ship’s experienced bridge team would ensure the voyage proceeds as planned.
The Diamond Princess is on a nine-night cruise itinerary that includes stops at Japan’s Southern Islands and a return to Yokohama, with a circumnavigation of Japan beginning on May 25, 2025.
The company expressed condolences to Captain Bartolomei’s family and support for the crew of the 2,600-guest vessel during this challenging time.
