CSO: Visitors to Ireland stay 8.7 nights and spend an average of €1,346 on their trips

  • In July 2023, out of the 650,200 foreign resident overnight visitors departing Ireland on overseas routes, 37.0pc were from Great Britain, 21.7pc were from the United States, and 6.9pc were from Germany.
  • 45.0pc of the visitors’ main reason for visiting Ireland was for holiday or leisure purposes.
  • The foreign resident visitors spent a total of 5,643,800 nights in the country.
  • The estimated expenditure of foreign resident overnight visitors on their trips to Ireland was €875.4 million.
  • On average, the visitors stayed 8.7 nights and spent €1,346 on their trips.

These findings were released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), who say revisions have been made to correct category errors in previous reports. The majority of departing passengers were Irish residents (58.7pc), with 11.4pc being same-day visitors and 29.9pc foreign resident overnight visitors. A new category where travellers from the six counties using airports or seaports in the 26 counties are counted as making same day visits when they are travelling outbound, but only outbound.

The highest proportion of foreign resident overnight visitors were from Britain (37.0pc), followed by the United States (21.7pc), and Germany (6.9pc).

Visitors from Other Europe had the longest stays, accounting for 40.9pc of the total nights spent. Holiday or leisure was the most common reason for visiting (45.0pc), and hotels were 

Day-to-day spending accounted for the highest portion at 36.8pc (€321.7 million), followed by accommodation at 31.1pc (€272 million) and fares at 29.0pc (€254.1 million). Overall, the average expenditure per visitor was €1,346, distributed among fares, prepayments, accommodation, and day-to-day expenses.
