Aviation leaders urge European Commission on EU ETS review

The Destination 2050 aviation alliance has sent an open letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and key commissioners regarding the 2026 EU ETS revision for aviation. 

Industry leaders call for measures that support decarbonisation while protecting competitiveness. They emphasise the need for a balanced approach in the upcoming review.

The letter urges the Commission to maintain the current geographical scope of the EU ETS and avoid unilateral expansion. It calls for reinforcement of CORSIA as the global carbon pricing framework for international aviation. The alliance also requests reinvestment of aviation-related ETS revenues into Sustainable Aviation Fuel support and the Innovation Fund.

Signatories include leaders from Airlines for Europe, ACI EUROPE, ASD, CANSO Europe and ERA. The industry remains committed to net-zero emissions by 2050. The letter addresses the revision process that continues in 2026.

Ourania Georgoutsakou shared “we ask for a policy framework that matches that ambition with competitiveness, investment certainty, and global coherence.”
