The Department of Transport expects to make a formal recommendation to the Minister within the next two weeks regarding potential amendments to the controversial new Donegal–Dublin PSO schedule.
Following a high-stakes meeting on 9 March 2026, Donegal Airport management provided an update on the ongoing efforts to restore vital services before the new contract takes full effect on 29 March 2026.
Department officials confirmed they are now in ongoing talks with the airline (Emerald Airlines) to discuss alternatives to the planned timetable.
Specific Reinstatements Sought: The discussions are focused on reinstating the afternoon flight rotations and restoring the “overnighting” of the aircraft at Donegal Airport to facilitate early morning departures.
The Department aims to conclude these talks and issue a recommendation to the Minister by approximately 24 March 2026. Officials explained that strict procurement rules prevented them from engaging with airport management during the initial tender process, which led to the “dissatisfaction” over the lack of communication.
The backlash stems from the new €17m PSO contract awarded to Emerald Airlines (operating as Aer Lingus Regional). The proposed schedule includes scrapping the long-standing afternoon rotation in favour of an 8:30 PM return from Donegal.
Stakeholders, including the Donegal Cancer Flights and Services group, warned that a 6:30 AM arrival from Dublin and late-night return from Donegal makes same-day medical appointments and business trips nearly impossible.
In late February 2026, the Government separately announced the Regional Airports Programme 2026–2030, which allocates approximately €45m in capital investment over four years. Donegal Airport remains a primary beneficiary of this programme, alongside Shannon, Ireland West (Knock), and Kerry airports
