Dublin Airport has opened a new pet screening facility, allowing animals to travel in the hold of aircraft.

Since 2022, checking pets into the hold has not been possible at Dublin Airport as the baggage handling system in both terminals was refurbished.

The facility is located in Terminal 1 but can be used by passengers from both terminals.

The screening process uses X-ray equipment suitable for animals.

Interested passengers should contact their airline in advance and have their pets in a suitable transport crate.

Pets must be kept in a well-ventilated and secure transport crate, with specific maximum dimensions. The maximum crate size allowed is 950mm in height, 950mm in width, and 2m in length.

Ryanair do not allow pets be carried in the hold although other airlines do. Pets can be booked for carriage on Aer Lingus flights in the aircraft hold through a pet agent at IAG Cargo.

Dogs and cats usually need a valid pet passport, a microchip, particular vaccinations, and a veterinary health certificate.

Different rules apply to special assistance animals.
