European Waterways has finalised the purchase of Shannon Princess, Ireland’s only luxury hotel barge, that has been operating on the River Shannon since 2003.

Owned previously by Ruairi and Olivia Gibbons, the Shannon Princess maintains its established itinerary as part of its new ownership, focusing on enhancements for an upgraded guest experience.

Due to rising demand, plans are in place to extend the 2025 season, facilitated by European Waterways’ sales and reservations team.

Future offerings will include curated experiences like private whiskey tastings at historic distilleries, private visits to stately homes, guided tours of ancient castles and walking and fishing opportunities.

Shannon Princess will adopt the traditional blue, yellow and red European Waterways livery ahead of the 2025 cruise season in line with all other European Waterways-owned barges.

Derek Banks, managing director of European Waterways shared “We are thrilled to welcome the Shannon Princess to the European Waterways family. Her charm and character align perfectly with our commitment to luxury and cultural immersion. This acquisition further enhances our ability to offer our guests unforgettable journeys through Ireland’s stunning landscapes and historic waterways.”
