A film titled Armada 1588: Shipwreck & Survival will be premiered in Madrid on March 12 as part of Semana de Irlanda, depicting the adventures of a Spanish Armada soldier, Captain Francisco de Cuéllar, who survived a shipwreck off the Irish coast in 1588.

The film, produced by Spanish Armada Ireland, showcases the story of de Cuéllar’s escape and survival for seven months in Ireland after the shipwreck at Streedagh Beach in Sligo.
The premiere in Madrid is expected to strengthen cultural ties between Spain and Ireland, with the Irish Armada Visitor Centre providing audiences with additional context and information about the historic event.
The film, with dramatic reconstructions, CGI scenes, and animation, aims to bring the Armada history to a wider audience, with premieres in Spanish and an English version available for download.
Eddie O’Gorman, President of Spanish Armada Ireland said “It truly is an incredible story.
From being hurled by the waves up onto the beach, until he escaped to the relative safety provided by some local Gaelic chieftains, de Cuéllar was in constant danger during the months he spent in Ireland. The testimony he later wrote is a very significant part of Armada history and was what we based the film on.”
