Fincantieri and Viking announced plans to construct the industry’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ships, Viking Libra and Viking Astrea, which will operate with zero emissions.
The ships are being built in Italy, with deliveries scheduled for 2026 and 2027, incorporating new technology for hydrogen distribution, logistics, and storage through container systems.
Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO of Fincantieri, shared, “Relying on our expertise, we truly have industrialized a solution that today is commercialized and a reality.”
Torstein Hagen, Viking’s Chairman and CEO, shared “One of the problems that we have is that the supply system for this has not been developed yet. So, until further notice, our way of dealing with it is to have hydrogen containerized.”
“We hope that this is a way towards a time when we all most likely will be in a hydrogen economy,” noting that the task of developing this technology is costly and complex.
