Contracts for the construction of the N5 Ballaghaderreen to Scramoge road project, bypasses four towns and villages in the area have been signed. It spans 34km and is estimated to cost over €450m and bypasses the towns and villages of Frenchpark, Bellanagare, Tulsk and Strokestown.
The main construction contract for the project has been awarded to Wills Bros. Ltd., a company based in Mayo. The project is expected to be substantially completed by October 2027, with a total duration of four years.
The project aims to provide a safe and efficient road connection of modern standards for the West region, in line with European, national, regional, and local planning policies. It will replace 35km of sub-standard single carriageway road that has remained unimproved for over 40 years, completing a significant missing link on the N5 National Primary route between Dublin and Westport.
The new road will also prioritize the retention of access for local traffic and enable the development of sustainable transport policies for shorter commutes and safer active travel measures. Preparatory works have already begun for the project.
Tulsk was made famous by a Christy Moore song.
