Minister Dara Calleary has approved €300,000 funding for Fighting Words, an Irish language youth initiative for the next three years from 2025 to 2028. The funding promotes Irish among youth through storytelling. Over 25,000 students joined events in 2024.
The programme offers free tutoring, mentoring and publishing in creative writing. Activities target young people in Gaeltacht areas and schools..
The Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht provided the allocation. Fighting Words have run projects since 2019 in Gaeltacht regions. Creative sessions encourage the use of the language positively.
Minister Calleary shared “The work being undertaken by Fighting Words is a great example of the different ways through which we can attract young people to the beauty and richness of the Irish language.”
Colm Ó Cuanacháin shared “It is wonderful to receive this continuous support from the Minister for the Gaeltacht, in view of the importance of writing in Irish.”
