The battle of Vinegar Hill took place on June 21, 1798, when English colonial forces under General Gerard Lake surrounded the hill, launching a fierce artillery bombardment before storming the summit. Although the rebels suffered severe losses and were heavily defeated, this rebellion shook English rule in Ireland to its core.
