Huge, fast-moving wildfires have destroyed up to half of the historic tourist town of Jasper in Canada, with entire streets levelled by the fire

No deaths have been reported, but 20,000 tourists and 5,000 residents have evacuated the area, while firefighters work to save as many buildings as possible

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the damage as a “worst nightmare” for the community, as the focus remains on containing the towering flames

Climate change is believed to increase the risk of wildfires worldwide, with researchers warning of more lightning strikes in forests in northern regions.
