Dublin Airport plans to demolish the old North Terminal as part of its expansion efforts, has raised concerns from Architect Angela Rolfe regarding the building’s architectural value.
The North Terminal, opened in 1959 to accommodate growing passenger numbers, has historical significance as it handled VIPs, Heads of State, and Irish troops, and later served as a training facility and for Dublin Airport Garda.
Architect Angela Rolfe and environmentalist Frank McDonald argue for preserving the North Terminal as a rare example of modernist infrastructural architecture representing a progressive Ireland when built.
The Dublin Airport Authority (daa) states they are mindful of the airport’s historical significance and built heritage while seeking to meet future demand, awaiting the outcome of the planning process with Fingal County Council before making a decision on the North Terminal’s fate.
