Restrictions on unaccompanied truck trailers traveling on Irish Sea ferries from Holyhead have led to significant cost increases for Irish hauliers as of January 2025.

Freight costs for many loads have surged by as much as €600 per trailer, amounting to an increase of up to 25pc for those dropped at Holyhead’s quayside.

The rise in costs is a concern for Irish consumers, who will face higher prices for goods due to increased shipping expenses according to the road hauliers.

The road haulage industry in Ireland is facing challenges attributed to these shipping regulations, impacting the overall logistics and transport landscape.
