Hook Lighthouse in county Wexford will host the age-old traditional “arrow ceremony” on New Year’s Day 2024.

The Dunbrody Archers will participate in the ceremony at 1 pm, accompanied by Cllr Anthony Connick, An Cathaoirleach of the Municipal District of New Ross Council.

The ceremony symbolises the Mayor and corporation of New Ross Town Council claiming authority over the Tower and waters. The Mayor will cast an arrow into the sea, signifying the Ports authority over the estuary.

On New Year’s Day, the Hook Lighthouse will open early at 7:30 am for visitors to enjoy a sunrise breakfast while witnessing the New Year’s sun rising.

Another age-old tradition, known as “Daisy Day,” will also take place at Hook Lighthouse on St. Stephen’s Day. Prizes will be awarded for finding the first daisy and making the best daisy chain.

Hook Lighthouse is renowned as the oldest intact working lighthouse globally, with a rich history dating back to the 5th century.

The Hook Lighthouse Visitor Centre and Café will close on December 19th but will reopen on St. Stephen’s Day, offering lighthouse tours, art activities for children with resident artist Rose, and food options at the café.
