The HSE says it has noticed a high number of holidaymakers returning from Spain, particularly Salou, with the bug cryptosporidiosis over the past month.
The bug can cause gastroenteritis and is likely due to extreme weather experienced in European countries, particularly in the Mediterranean region, during the summer. Symptoms of the illness include diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, and vomiting.
The HSE recommends frequent handwashing with soap and clean water, or the use of alcohol-based sanitizers. It says it is important to take precautions when drinking water, checking if tap water is properly treated. If unsure about tap water’s safety, it is advised not to drink it or use it for brushing teeth.
Additional precautions include avoiding the use of ice in drinks and showering after swimming in pools or the sea. Beer, wine, hot drinks, bottled or canned drinks are considered safe. The HSE says caution should also be taken when consuming food.
