IATA and carbon market stakeholders urged governments to issue Letters of Authorization (LoAs) to release CORSIA Eligible Emissions Units (EEUs) for airlines to meet carbon offsetting obligations.
Only 15.8m CORSIA-eligible credits are available from Guyana, against a projected demand of 146–236m EEUs for 2024–2026.
LoAs ensure emissions reductions are counted once under the Paris Agreement, supporting a transparent market and CORSIA’s environmental integrity.
CORSIA funds verified emissions reductions in other sectors, aiding environmental and socio-economic progress, particularly in developing countries.
IATA provides guidance and workshops to assist states in issuing LoAs, addressing the critical supply shortage threatening CORSIA’s implementation.
Yue Huang shared: “CORSIA is a vital part of aviation’s global climate strategy. Through it, airlines mitigate their climate impact by funding verified emissions reductions in other sectors.”
Adefunke Adeyemi shared: “Africa expresses support to CORSIA. Unlocking access to CORSIA-eligible units and attracting climate finance. This will enable Africa to show commitment to sustainability and shape global solutions with regional perspectives.”
