The ‘In Search of Hy-Brasil’ exhibition which showcased at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale has been launched on Inis Meáin, with plans for a nationwide tour.
The installation highlights rural islands’ role in sustainable living amidst challenging conditions over centuries, featuring a linen tapestry mapping Ireland’s maritime zone and sea sack seats made from discarded fishers’ rope.
The exhibition encompasses the resourcefulness and ingenuity of island communities, focusing on Inis Meáin, Sceilg Mhichíl, and Clare Island through various displays like a wool model and a survey of flora and fauna.
The exhibition is curated by a team of five architects with deep connections to Irish islands, aiming to explore the relationship between Ireland’s islands and their natural environment.
The project explores how rural communities, like those on the islands, excel in renewable energy and recycling, offering lessons for the modern world in sustainable living practices.
The exhibition tour will include stops at Solstice in Navan from June to August and Architecture at the Edge in Co Galway in September and October, showcasing the immersive experience of Hy-Brasil and its themes of resilience and sustainability.
