Visitor numbers to Ireland down 7pc in the twelve months to October

Some 568,900 foreign residents completed vsits to Ireland in October 2025 according to the Central Statistics Office, up 3.8pc compared with October 2024 and down 40.5pc on pre-pandemic. These visitors spent 4.0m nights in Ireland, up 4pc with the same month in 2024.  Rolling annual was 6,218,500, down 7pc on last year.

Outbound trips for October reached 1,252,700 up 12.3pc on 2024 and 70.9pc on pre pandemic with rolling annual up slightly by 10.6pc to 12,764,500. The outbound to inbound proportion has changed dramatically since the CSO changed its methodology after the pandemic. In September the ratio was 31pc inbound and 69pc outbound, compared with majority inbound figures of 57/43 in October 2019 and 2018.

The visitors’ average length of stay last month was 7.1 nights, unchanged from October 2024. The visitors spent €529m on their trips, down 1pc compared with October 2024. 

The average cost of trips by visitors to Ireland excluding fares in October 2025 was €1,228 (€929 excluding fares) on their trip to Ireland, breaking down as €299 on their fare, €34 on prepayments, €417 on accommodation, and €478 on day-to-day expenses. In October 2024, the comparable mean expenditure on these items was €337, €45, €441, and €489, respectively.

August inbound visitor numbers were up by 1.2pc, the only previous year on year increased recorded in 2025 by the CSO. Numbers were down by -25.0 pc in January, -29.8pc in February, -15.4 pc in March, -3.8 pc in April, -9.9 pc in May, -2.2 pc in June and -1.4 pc in July.

For the first six months of the year, visitor numbers were down by 12.9pc on 2024 and 44pc on pre-pandemic. 

October rises

  • Visitors from Britain are up 9.1pc on last year and down 45.3pc on pre-pandemic, rolling annual was 2,361,500, up 9.1pc on the 12 months to October 2024.
  • Visitors from North America are up 8.8pc on last year and down 28.6pc on pre-pandemic, rolling annual was 1,524,200, up 1.7pc on the 12 months to October 2024.
  • Visitors from USA were up 7.1pc on last year and down 29.8pc on pre=pandemic, rolling annual was 1,289,200, up 2.7pc on the 12 months to Octoberr 2024.
  • Visitors from Canada were up 25.7pc on last year and down 20.8pc on pre-pandemic, rolling annual was 212,300, up 9.8pc on the 12 months to October 2024.
  • Visitors from Australia and New Zealand were up 9.3pc on last year and down 38.8pc on pre-pandemic, rolling annual was 121.900, down 6.2pc on the 12 months to October 2024.

October falls

  • Visitors from Europe were down 2.5pc on last year and down 43.4pc on pre-pandemic, rolling annual was 2,050,300, down 14pc on the 12 months to October 2024..
  • Visitors from Germany were down 11.1pc on on last year and down 48.6pc on pre-pandemic, rolling annual was 427,500, down 8.2pc on the 12 months to October 2024.
  • Visitors from France were up 2.2pc after a colossal drop of 35.7pc in October, and down 29.7pc on pre-pandemic, rolling annual was 345.400, down 51.3pc on the 12 months to October 2024.
  • Visitors from Italy were down 8pc on last year and down 29.4pc on pre-pandemic, rolling annual was 203,000, down 18.2pc on the 12 months to October 2024.
  • Visitors from Scandinavia were down 29.4pc on last year,, rolling annual was
    126.100, down 23.5pc on the 12 months to October 2024.
  • Visitors from Spain and Portugal were flat compared with last year and down 39.3pc on pre-pandemic,  rolling annual was 550,100, down 12.5pc on the 12 months to October 2024.
  • Visitors from Benelux were flat on last year  rolling annual was 263.400, down 15.1pc on the 12 months to October 2024.
