Airbnb is facing a potential tax bill worth hundreds ofms of euros following a recent Italian court ruling.
Prosecutors in Milan have obtained authorisation to seize €779.5m from Airbnb, claiming that the company has failed to comply with Italian tax laws.
Italian tax authorities require Airbnb to pay them 21pc of landlords’ rental income in the country, as mandated by an EU Court of Justice ruling in 2017.
The seizure order covers the years 2017-2021 and targets Airbnb’s Ireland unit, as well as three individuals who held managerial roles during that period.
Airbnb had previously appealed the tax crackdown and argued that it violated EU principles concerning the freedom to operate across the bloc. However, their appeal was unsuccessful.
