KLM is planning a demonstration flight using ZeroAvia’s hydrogen-electric engines in 2026, which utilize liquid hydrogen in fuel cells to power turboprop aircraft.

These engines could potentially reduce climate impact by up to 90% compared to kerosene-fuelled flights, emitting only low-temperature water vapor.

KLM and ZeroAvia will work together to identify the optimal airport pair for the demonstration flights, obtain regulatory flying permits, ensure a supply of liquid hydrogen fuel, and establish supporting infrastructure for aircraft fuelling.

The collaboration aims to provide evidence for cleaner flight adoption on KLM’s network and accelerate the development of hydrogen aircraft concepts across the EU, following ZeroAvia’s previous plans for zero-emission flights between Rotterdam The Hague and London in 2024.
