Knock airport’s next-generation cabin baggage screening system is now complete and operational.
The new machines at Ireland West Airport eliminate the need for passengers to remove laptops and liquids from their bags, speeding up queue times and enhancing the passenger experience.
The restriction on liquids of more than 100ml no longer applies, allowing passengers to travel with larger quantities of liquids if they fit into their cabin bags.
The facility is also available in Donegal, Kerry and Shannon airports. In Dublin six of the 30 scanners have been replaced by C3 scanners with the remainder in T2 to be replaced by next summer and those in T1 by summer 2025.
The new system reduces touchpoints and makes the passenger journey through security quicker and easier, while also improving security standards and operational efficiency at the airport.
This project is part of a €6m investment in upgrading facilities at Ireland West airport, which includes:
- Upgrading and resurfacing works in our airport car parks
- Opening of a new Sláinte Barista Café
- Enhancements to Shopwest Departures Retail Shop
- Runway End Safety Area works
- Progressing of the airport’s sustainability and environmental strategy
- Upgrading the airport’s electrical infrastructure
- Purchasing new fire tender vehicle and extension of Fire Station building
- Upgrading of the Oversized Baggage X-Ray System
- Upgrading of the Security Screening Access area
Joe Gilmore, Managing Director, Ireland West Airport said “This airport prides itself on the ease and stress-free nature of using the airport and this new screening system further enhances the experience for our customers, ensuring passengers have even more time now to relax in our duty-free shop, restaurants and bars before their flight. This project forms part of an overall €6m investment in projects at the airport this year to comply with International safety and security regulations and also to future proof the airport as we continue to enhance our facilities and the customer experience as we welcome over 800,000 passengers through the airport this year. I would also like to acknowledge the continued funding support provided by the Department of Transport towards these critically important safety and security related projects which will provide for an even smoother experience for passengers using the airport’.
