A panel discussion examined the psychology of passengers in stressful situations during a session at the IATA AGM in Rio de Janeiro.

Images of passengers evacuating aircraft with their luggage continue to shock observers. Brett Molesworth Professor of Human Factors and Aviation Safety at UNSW School of Aviation joined other specialists to debate how to change this behaviour.

The panel analysed human factors that drive passengers to retrieve belongings during emergencies instead of prioritising rapid exit. They reviewed data from past incidents and psychological studies that explain decision making under stress. Participants considered cabin crew training methods and communication techniques that could improve compliance with safety instructions.

The discussion took place from 12:15 to 12:45 as part of the 82nd IATA Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro. Experts explored practical interventions including pre flight messaging and aircraft design modifications. The session addressed the critical seconds that affect evacuation efficiency and overall safety outcomes.

Brett Molesworth shared “Understanding the cognitive processes under high stress allows us to develop better interventions that prioritise passenger safety during evacuations.”
