TG4 presenter Manchán Magan has visited holy wells that have been sites of worship for centuries and are still visited for comfort and peace for a six-part documentary series.

“Ag Triall ar an Tobar” explores the myths and legends surrounding Ireland’s Holy wells and their continued significance in today’s world

The series delves into the history, customs, and beliefs associated with each holy well, from tying ribbons to trees to seeking cures for various ailments

Holy wells in Ireland have both Christian and pagan origins, serving as symbols of Irish culture and a connection to nature, with each well holding unique stories and healing properties

Manchán Magan said “in this series, we have only visited 1pc of the holy wells in Ireland. And without the efforts of the community, there’s a chance these places would be gone. It’s amazing the work that goes on, collecting and preserving our culture. It’s vital that we record every detail about these wells so we have it to pass onto the next generation. It’s not a small amount of work at all…it’s a challenge.”

Thursdays @ 08.00pm on TG4 from 14th March
