Christian Estrosi, the Mayor of Nice, is reconsidering a plan to prohibit large cruise ships from visiting the Nice-Côte d’Azur region after originally proposing a ban on vessels with over 900 passengers.

The law aimed at curbing overtourism was set to take effect in July and included ports such as Villefranche-sur-Mer and Nice.

Following consultations with local leaders, Estrosi is now seeking a compromise that balances public health interests with support for the local economy.

The revised proposal allows 65 calls from cruise ships carrying up to 2,500 passengers annually in Villefranche-sur-Mer, while allowing unlimited docking for ships with over 450 guests in Nice.

In 2025, Villefranche-sur-Mer is expected to welcome 90 cruise ship visits, and Nice is projected to receive approximately 125 cruise calls, including some from larger vessels.
