Meliá Hotels International has reported a strong third-quarter net profit of €89.4m, rebounding from a first-half loss while warning that the October high-speed rail accident and service suspension on the Madrid to Seville line could dampen demand in southern Spain. Third-quarter revenue rose 8pc year-over-year to €659.6m, driven by resilient summer resort demand.
Revenue per available room increased by 7.5pc at constant currency excluding the exit from Cuba. EBITDA reached €198.3m, up 4pc compared to the same period last year. The company completed its full withdrawal from 34 hotels in Cuba between June and July, which created a one-off hit of €79.8m.
Direct-channel bookings are running at a double-digit growth rate compared to last year. Management flagged potential headwinds in southern Spain due to ongoing rail disruptions following the late-October crash.
