The former Salthill tourism office in Galway city has been reduced to debris after demolition works started on January 12. The small circular building stood unused for nearly 15 years. It is situated between the Seapoint Leisure Centre and Galway Atlantaquaria.
The site is planned for rezoning from recreation and amenity use to commercial zoning to aid economic development. A fully operational tourism office operates from Eyre Square.
Previous discussions proposed incorporating the building into the aquarium as a penguin enclosure or repurposing it as a business development hub. Future plans for the site remain unconfirmed. A committee meeting of Galway West city councillors is scheduled for later this week.
