Milan has implemented Italy’s first ban on smoking outdoors, prohibiting smoking in all public areas, including streets, with fines ranging from €40 to €240 for violators, although the ban does not extend to e-cigarettes.
The new ordinance aims to improve air quality and protect public health by reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, particularly in crowded areas frequented by children.
This ban follows a series of progressively stricter smoking regulations established since 2020, reflecting a growing emphasis on combating pollution and promoting healthier environments.
While the ban has received mixed reactions from residents, it is expected to contribute positively to Milan’s air quality, especially ahead of the upcoming Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.
In Europe, the fewest smokers are found in Sweden, where 8pc of the population smoke.
In Bulgaria the figures stands at 37pc.
