Mogán, a popular tourist town in Gran Canaria, is set to introduce a €0.15 tourist tax per person per day, intended to fund local tourism infrastructure and services, with implementation starting in January 2025.
The council aims to utilize the tax revenues exclusively for enhancing tourist experiences and maintaining public spaces, addressing underfunding concerns associated with high tourist activity.
This initiative marks the first municipal-level tourist tax in Spain, extending to all forms of tourist accommodations within the municipality, while property owners will be responsible for payment.
Mayor Onalia Bueno emphasized that this tax aims to equitably distribute the financial burdens of servicing both residents and tourists, ensuring that the local community benefits from tourism without disproportionately increasing the burden on residents.
