Moorage fees set to be increased by Waterways Ireland

An increase of the €152 moorage fees on Ireland’s waterways has put the resident population of Ireland’s houseboats under increased pressure.

Niamh Owens and Sammy Khalid had been refused a mortgage and were struggling to find an affordable rental property when they found their two-bedroom houseboat on the Royal Canal in Kildare. They now find that an increase in moorage fees is threatening their plan 

All vessels using the Grand and Royal Canals and the Barrow Navigation must display appropriate valid Permit, a Combined Mooring and Passage Permit (€126) and if not intending to move every five days, an Extended Mooring Permit (€152).
