Mozambique has implemented a mandatory Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for visa-exempt travelers from 29 countries, including Ireland.
Previously, citizens from these countries could enter Mozambique without a visa for short stays of up to 30 days for tourism or business purposes.
Travelers must now apply for an ETA online at least 48 hours before departure, providing documentation such as a valid passport, proof of accommodation, and a return or onward ticket.
The introduction of the ETA system aims to enhance border security and streamline entry procedures, linked to Mozambique’s Economic Acceleration Stimulus Package to boost tourism and investment.
Citizens of Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries remain exempt from the ETA requirement and can enter visa-free for up to 30 days, given they satisfy specific entry conditions.
Speaking at Africa’s Travel Indaba, Fredson Bacar, Mozambique minister for tourism shared: “The ETA is not a visa but a pre-registration notification of intent to enter the country, valid for three months from approval.
The department shared: “Failure to obtain an ETA or pay the fee may result in denied boarding or entry.”
